What is Maya Abdominal Massage?

Maya Abdominal Massage is a gentle external massage that helps to optimise the functioning of the reproductive and digestive organs by relieving congestion and improving the flow of the fluids in the circulatory and lymphatic systems, the transmission of nerve impulses and the flow of the body’s subtle energy (‘chi’). It is best known for correcting prolapsed or tilted uteruses (wombs) in women but it is also excellent for alleviating many common digestive disorders and back pain.

This form of massage has been practised for thousands of years in Central America, passed down from one generation of Maya midwives, shamans and other natural healers to the next. The ancient Maya people were a sophisticated civilisation and their culture and traditions live on today through modern-day descendants in places such as Belize, Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras.

Maya Abdominal Massage is now attracting the wider attention around the world that it justifiably deserves thanks to Dr. Rosita Arvigo, a Chicago-born Doctor of Naprapathy (naprapathy is an offshoot of chiropractic). Rosita has lived in Belize for over 30 years and apprenticed there for more than 10 years to one of the last traditional Maya shamans, Don Elijio Panti, until his death at the age of 103 in 1996. She also trained with a number of traditional midwives and other healers. With her background, Rosita was able to apply a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology to explain, in modern medical terms, how and why these traditional Maya natural healing techniques work. I was fortunate enough to do my professional training with Rosita personally.

Most common female symptoms relieved by this treatment

"The uterus is a woman's centre. If her uturus is not in proper position and good health, nothing in her life will be right. She will be as out of balance as her uterus."
Don Elijio Panti
(1893-1996)

  • What to expect in a treatment

  • Comprehensive review of personal history & health-care needs. When you book your appointment, I will send you a detailed questionnaire to complete; you will need to bring this with you to the treatment session.

  • Massage of the lower abdomen. In women with an intact uterus, this gently guides the uterus into its optimum position. In women who have had a hysterectomy, it helps to improve the circulation around the scar and to the remaining organs.

  • Massage of the upper abdomen. This relieves muscular tension in the diaphragm, improving the blood flow to the digestive system.

  • Massage of the mid back and low back. Structural realignment of the pelvis (if necessary).

  • Instruction in self-treatment (“self-care”) techniques for individuals to use at home to reinforce the benefits of the professional treatment. Self-care is an integral part of the overall treatment, and you will be given a handout of the self-care routine to take home with you.

Other suggestions for home-based after-care will depend on your individual needs. They might include castor oil packs, herbal vaginal steams and/or the use of a faja (organ support wrap for women). If you are a practising yogini, we can also talk about how yoga can support this work.

The first session costs £70 and will last about 2 hours; this includes a comprehensive consultation, followed by the professional treatment and then instruction in self-care, which helps you to maintain the benefits of the professional treatment when you return home. Subsequent sessions, if required, cost £40 and will last about 1 hour.

    FEMALE CLIENTS ONLY.

  • A pessary being used for organ support will need to be removed before treatment

  • After abdominal surgery (medical clearance will be needed)

  • Maya Abdominal Massage Testimonials

"Before having my Maya massage with Sue I wasn’t aware of having a particular problem with my uterus, just a list of the annoying monthly discomforts that so many of us put up with. The benefits for me have been so rapid and amazing that I passionately believe that everyone should try this to see what it can do for them. In my case, I felt immediately energised, something definitely shifted! I’d been struggling to lose weight following a miscarriage but I’ve found that I’m now steadily losing half a pound a day. My period has come and gone without the usual headaches, tension, painful cramping and flooding. I feel generally much lighter in both body and spirit. The daily self-care technique that Sue teaches is a really nurturing, empowering experience. I find I’m giving a lot more thought to the kind of stresses I’ve routinely put my body under, I feel very connected to, and protective of, my ‘centre’ now. I also feel more motivated to work towards optimum health rather than accepting less. I had no experience of massage before this but I felt very safe in Sue’s hands as she combines confidence with sensitivity. She has a genuine enthusiasm for this technique, she has clearly felt the benefits herself and wants to share it. Highly recommended!"

"Both periods, the one immediately after the treatment & this one, were on time as usual. They were both fairly easy. I noticed this time the uncomfortable physical sensation pre-period was lesser than it generally is. My backache this month was a lot less as well. I also notice I have better bladder control & can hold on for a bit longer than I could before."

“In the week leading up to Christmas I realised one day that I hadn't taken my regular tablet for the waterworks and also that I had not been aware of any problem so I decided to stay off them for a while and see how things went. When I have tried to do so in the past I have been driven back on to the tablets within a couple of days because of the sudden urgency to pee, which I have been unable to control. Anyhow I am happy to report a major improvement. I still get the urgent calling but find now that it is controllable to the extent that I can forget about it, sometimes for an hour or so. If I do give in to it then usually it is a 'false alarm' in the sense that the quantity of urine passed does not measure up to the urgency I feel. […] In the month or so since I gave up the tablets I have only suffered one minor mishap and that was when I came back in to the house after a long walk. […] I can't say that I do the self treatment every day - some days I can't face it! but I try to do it most days and will be keeping it up. So thank you for the treatments. I am really pleased with the benefits so far.”
